This email, to 1996 Door Group members, highlights some of the more important functions of the Door Group members. You can also find out more by reading the Door Group policy document.
Notes for UCC Door Group people:
December 19, 1995
Dear Door Group Person,
The Committee would like to see the following attributes from all Door Group people at all times:
- Responsibility.
- Courtesy.
- Honesty.
We are approaching another O-Day, and would like to greatly increase our membership. A larger membership means more money in the club, and more money means better equipment for everyone to use. Hence, by helping us present a better Club to anyone who comes near the UCC Club Room, it helps everyone.
Being in Door Group means that you are responsible for the room while it is under your control. Don't let stuff get stolen, broken, or damaged. Don't let people accept reverse charge phone calls (STD and IDD and 0055 are already banned from the phone). Don't let people annoy other people. Don't annoy other people yourself.
Door Group are the ambassadors of the Club, and should try and make everyone in the room feel welcomed... don't scare people away! If someone wanders in looking lost, try not to scoff at them and embarrass them -- help them. If they are for GCL, then fair enough, there are enough signs up saying "This is not the GCL". If they are looking for the Club, help them out. Especially with the new influx of 1st Years, they will probably not even know what UNIX is! (Don't just throw them into vi and give them nightmares!)
Door Group people have been given the power to ask people to leave the room. Use this only if someone is being really annoying/destructive. Possibly even talk to them and ask them to behave somewhat. Hopefully this situation will never arise, but you know what to do if you have problems with people!
Basically, Door Group is now a lot more than just being able to get in and out of the Club Room when you want. It is the face of the Club -- you are representing us to new people, and should remember that when in the room and acting on behalf of the Club.
If you feel that this is too much for you, then you can ask Committee to be removed from the Door Group, tough I feel that this is not asking too much, and many people are already living up to these expectations!
Thank you for your help.
