| Hi. My name is Evan Scott. Welcome to my web site. | Curriculum Vitae |

In order to describe who I am, it is necessary to classify (i.e. label) myself. As a good friend of mine says "labels are for other people". Unfortunately, labelling is a necessary evil.
The quandry is, what do I define as the most important part of me? Do I define myself by my career, my gender, my nationality, my sexuality, my friends, my hobbies, or my taste in icecream? I'd like to think that I'm more than all of these things combined. Sadly, we live in a ranked and ordered world. Despite this, please don't assign any meaning to the particular order I list below, and don't pigeon-hole me based upon what I include and don't include.
I'm a youngish Australian software engineer. I'm a guy. I'm a gay guy. I was born in the USA, and have dual Australian and US citizenship. I've spent most of my life in Perth, Western Australia, with occasional stints in other parts of the country; in particular I've lived in Brisbane and Sydney.
I've spent the last ten years in a combination of studying and working. I've finally got my Bachelor of Engineering (Information Technology) from the University of Western Australia, and along the way I've worked for the Australian Taxation Office (for 6 months in 1990), Stanilite Pacific Pty. Ltd. (RIP)/ADI Ltd. (for 19 months between 1995 and 1997) and Indian Pacific Communications Ltd (for 3 months during the uni summer recess of 1997/1998).
For the past three years I've used motorcycles as my sole means of private transport. My first bike was a very cute 1986 GPZ250r (red and white), until I upgraded to a 1996 (1997 model) YZF600RJ (dark blue and silver), which has been very good to me for the last two and a bit years. I love riding, but I'll probably have to give it up for the next couple of years - it simply isn't practical to have it as my only form of transport (die hard motorcycle fans will disagree of course ;-).
I love Perth dearly, for the gorgeous weather, and the many lovely people I am privileged to call my friends. I've lived in Perth for a long time though, and I think now is the time to move on, at least for a while. I would like very much to work overseas, and in particular in Europe. A non-English speaking country would be nice, but probably impractical.
I love reading, particularly SF&F, and some semi-technical magazines (such as New Scientist. I enjoy singing in a choir, though I'm not in any choirs at the moment. When I can, I indulge in casual games of squash. Staying fit is, in a perverse way, something I do for fun - going to the gym feels satisfying, and I can't deny there's a certain ... aesthetic appeal.
I discovered the joys of nightclubs quite late in life, so the novelty hasn't quite worn off yet - although I'm sure it will soon.
I've dabbled with other languages, and in particular in Auslan (Australian Sign Language).
I have been known to play the odd computer game, or to create computer applications "for fun".
Playing cards with friends is always worthwhile, and in particular a perverse game called "Bartok", probably invented at Unisfa.
I've long been associated with the University Computer Club, and I still hang out there on occasion, though fairly infrequently these days.
