Green things and salutations. I am but a beginner scribe in the Kingdom of Lochac. I have put up here the few pieces that I have done in my time. The lovely lady who has helped me on my tortured path to scribal bliss is Mistress Murghein ni Grainne She is more than wonderful and an artisan in her own right! :)

Aratus of Soli: 'Phaenomena'
The constellation Cetus, the sea monster from which Perseus rescued Andromeda

France, Fleury, decorated by and English artist
late 10th century
Latin, 295 x 210 mm, 93 fols.
Harley MS 2506, f.42 (detail)

Aratus was a Greek stoic philosopher who lived during the 3rd Century BC.
His 'Phaenomena', in a Latin verse translation by Cicero, was a fundamental
work of reference for medieval astronomers. This copy was made at the
Benedictine monastary of Fleury on the river Loire, which had close links
with the monastic reform movement in the late 10th century England. Its
anonymous English artist is one of the great masters of the period. His
work, both tinted line drawings and fully coloured illuminations, is found
in a number of manuscripts, several apparantly produced in continental
monastaries, which suggests that he travelled extensively on both sides of
the Channel.

An exerpt from makura no soshi, a pastiche of idiosyncratic lists, diary entries and reminiscences of Japan by one of Japan's earliest prose masters, Sei Shonagon. It was written around 1000 AD, the Heian period of Japan.
I have little real information on this piece, or the rest of the book. I did this piece while studying in Japan in 1994. I was there on Rotary exchange and delved deeply into many of the finer Japanese arts (another story), shodou being one of them. One reference I have found on this was found at: http://www.kampo.co.jp/kyoto-journal/kjselections/kjshonagon.html" a local copy is here for if ever the other copy disappears.
I really really want to see a facsimile (or the original) of this collection of writing. Why not just the translation? A translation never conveys the whole meaning.

[Brusi of Dragonvale] This is my first award scroll for the SCA. It is a Leaf of Merit (of the Kingdom of the West) for Brusi of Dragonvale, a well renowned Lochac archer (amongst other things).

It's not a complete scan 'cause I was finishing the scroll while waiting for a plane at Melbourne airport on the way to Lochac's first coronation and had no scanner on me.... :(
Harsh critical comments (from self) are: 'count the mistakes' and I could be more even with my strokes/lettering.

[Sonnets] Some early Middle English sonnets I wrote as a favour for my Lady Sorcha of the Willows (now Lady Jane Grenville).
The image is to scale, which means the letters are 3mm high. fun fun fun :)
