Here's a slightly easier way to interface with a PSOne LCD, just build a composite video cable and plug it into the connector at the back. The video quality isn't as good as the VGA mod, but it's a lot easier and a lot more convenient.

Nb. I don't have any non Sony branded PSOne displays to test this adapter on, so i can only say that it works on a Sony branded PSOne LCD. Non-Sony branded displays may not have a 3.5mm connector at the rear.

Although this is a really simple adapter to build, please read the whole page before proceeding to make one of these. It'll save you time in trying to figure out what's wrong if it doesn't work.

You'll need the following:

You probably don't want the left and right audio inputs for the PSOne LCD, so leave those out. Solder a good quality shielded cable (solder both inner wires to the composite video point, and the surrounding shield to the common groud point), and solder that to a standard RCA composite connector - center pin is the composite signal and the surrounding connector is ground).

For my connector, i found that the cable that i used was too thick to fit into the plastic shell of the 3.5mm connector, so i just ended up using heatshrink over it. I also bent the heatshrink at 90 degrees so it sits nicely behind the PSOne display. You can see this on the right.

Please note that the 3.5mm 4 pin jacks are quite different. The ground on a 4 pin jack is NOT THE BASE of the connector (this seems rather counter intuitive, and i wonder if the designers chose this to deliberately confuse people). Also note that the sequence of the pins is reversed on the right hand side of the connector compared to the left.

After you've done all that, plug the composite connector into your video card's TV out, and plug the 3.5mm jack into the PSOne display. It should automatically switch on when a composite signal's present. If it doesn't, check that you've plugged the power pack in :), and after that check your wiring.

If you have an ATi video card (like me), you may need to force the drivers to display to the TV using the driver control panel.
