Treasurer's report: ~$2754.56 Incoming mail: WIRED magazine, Science Union Ball announcement. Machine reports: mackerel: Crashed today. Price for upgrade should be in on Monday. [TDH] (David Manchester) is organising some Sun SCSI cables which the UCC will buy. marlin: Extra RAM doesn't seem to be helping much. Possibility of reinstalling with Red Hat instead of Debian? Upgrade the kernel to 1.3.95? ACTION: [JEB] to upgrade marlin's kernel to a more recent release, in the hope that it will speed things up. We intend to replace marlin as a user machine. Possible specs are a P-120 or P-133, 32MB memory, 1-2Gb HDD. ACTION: [DAS] to post this announcement to the list and ask people to get quotes. Starfish: ncftp won't quit. moray: Happy. Beige: Happy. [YAK] enters: 1.27pm [MTL] enters: 1:30pm Book: [YAK] recommends a book - "Hackers: Heros of the Computer Revolution" for the UCC to buy. ACTION: Yakk to buy two copies - one for the UCC. UCC Camp: Please contact [SAF] about it. Small purchases: [DGC] reports that we're whittling away our income with lots of little purchases - try to have these donated where possible. Equipment donation: From Anatomy/Human Biology. Hardware group: Now exists. ACTION: [BBB] to create a mailing alias for it. [DGC] suggests that its first job to try to sort through our junk, find things that we don't want anymore, and post to the list about it. ACTION: HW group to do this. Shenton Park clean-out: Donate what items we can to good homes - failing that keep them for a couple more years and try again. Dumb terminals: We've run out of spare ones in the clubroom. We should get some of the ones from Shenton Park and bring them back. ACTION: [NTU] to announce a trip to Shenton Park on the 11th of May - meeting at the UCC at 11:00am. UCC lighting: A mercury vapour and a fluorescent light are broken above the UCC. [JEB] has contacted the appropriate people to organise fixing it. Esky: There's an esky of meat in the Cameron Hall stairwell, not to mention some... interesting... smells. [DGC] will ask the Science Union what they know about it. ACTION: [DGC] to poke people about getting a backup done. Games Night: Scheduled for 17th May, should get final confirmation. ACTION: [DGC] to liase with Penguin (Paul Wagland). [POQ] enters: 1:44pm [JPB] enters: 1:45pm Printer toner: Beige's printer's toner has run out. [JPB] reports that a replacement will cost $125 from Winthrop. This has to be paid for on a user pays system - which is problematic given the lack of automatic printer accounting. [NTU] has changed dispense's "donation" slot to a "laserprint" for convenience. Should the DEC line-printer be charged? No - not worth it, we have large quantities of triplicate paper to get through. [DGC] notes that "dispense laserprint" could get inconvenient for large numbers of pages. For those who don't know how to do loops in shell scripts, an option in dispense for repeating an action n times would be handy. What do we do about a replacement toner? [DGC] The UCC shouldn't pay until it thinks it's being paid for. [NTU] We can go on with the crap toner (possibly shaking it up) for a little while until we decide what to do. We could try refilling it - how much cheaper might that be? [YAK] But... that could void our warranty! [JPB] Get a new one, and refill that, rather than refilling the older one. [NTU] How much are we willing to subsidise this first replacement? Need a traceable accounting mechanism. ACTION: [NTU] to post to the list about the situation, and alert people to the existence of the DEC line-printer. Sponsorship could help pay for the first replacement - wait for any offers. ClarisDraw: We don't have an original printout of our 1996 Login form anymore - we're having trouble finding somewhere with a copy of ClarisDraw (ClarisWorks doesn't suffice, annoyingly enough) to print or convert it. Anyone know someone who might? [DGC] to chat to Penguin to try and pin down the GCL's copy. Debian mirror: Delete today. ACTION: [NTU] to rm -rf /services/ftp/debian /home too large: Ask the larger disc space users to reduce their usage somewhat. ACTION: [DGC] to post a request to the list on this topic. OLGA archive: We are happy to mirror it until approached about it, but don't want to become the primary site (too much traffic). [YAK]'s wheel application: [DGC] No, not at the moment. [MJH] Give him a probationary period? 6 months maximum, review the subject in one month. Webmaster: [YAK] is now the third webmaster. Vending machine: Waiting on access to a pin crimping tool. Meeting closed: 2:00pm
