Medieval Feasting Gear

In medieval times, people ate in a different manner to the way we eat today. Back then most people didn't have knives and forks as such, mostly they ate with their fingers! I have heard of a few interesting tales of the eating habits and the food people ate back in those days and they are quite intriguing!

To enjoy a Medieval feast put on by one of the groups in WA you need to get some gear together to take along. I have taken some photos of the gear that is generally regarded as eating utensils for the Medieval ages.

Description of the eating utensils in the picture.

  1. A bowl for eating soup out of.
  2. A plate for eating the main meal or pot luck dishes from.
  3. A steak knife with a wooden handle
  4. A wooden three-prong fork for holding meat.
  5. A goblet for drinking from. (you can also use glass bottles with rubber stoppers or ale mugs)
  6. A candle holder and a candle as people didn't have electricity back then!
  7. Another bowl (you can reuse the first bowl if you want to) for dessert dishes.
  8. *A metal soup spoon for eating soup.
  9. *A metal dessert spoon for eating dessert.

*: you can just have one dessert spoon for both soup and dessert if you want.

And as you can see, the feasting gear in the photo all look like they are made of wood, since most things back in the middle ages were made of wood.

You can also get items made of pewter and ceramics and these are also quite good to use for feasting.
