  1. Any of several marine bivalve mollusks, especially the edible members of the family Mytilidae and in particular Mytilus edulis, a blue-black species raised commercially in Europe. Mussels are often found attached to rocky surfaces or the sides of ships.
  2. Any of several freshwater bivalve mollusks of the genera Anodonta and Unio, found in the central United States, that burrow in the sand or mud of lakes and streams.

How and when machine obtained:

  • Mussel was bought in 1999 with money saved from Coke sales, and with member donations.

History prior to arrival at UCC:

  • There was none, as it was born at UCC.

UCC history of machine:

  • Mussel had the dual-Celeron hack applied - UCCans with power drills!
  • Mussel was retired as a user box in mid-2000 and moved into the main clubroom, and bought a NVidia TNT2 and sound card, and the CDRW was mounted in it.
  • At the beginning of 2001, mussel was upgraded to a dual 750MHz Pentium III with 256 MB of RAM, and one the celerons was used in the console box cod (retired), both now currently unused.
  • Mussel was moved back into the machine room and became the main user box for the X-Terms.
  • Mussel's /space gave way, mid 2002. It's tasks being taken up by the new fileserver meito (retired).

Current machine tasks:

  • It is now a general purpose user machine again.

Current software configuration:

  • Debian GNU/Linux
  • Linux 2.6

Current hardware configuration:

  • Two Pentium III 750MHz processors
  • 630MB RAM
  • rtl8139 Network Card (?)

Future plans for machine:

  • Move webserver onto mussel
